If Only I’d Known - Original Oil Painting

Canvas size 10x8 (overall framed size with wooden liner is approximately 20x18)

The thoughts—
They hide within my head
Teasing me relentlessly—
And into madness I am lead

You utter when I’m sleeping—
Burdening me with chatter
I just need some peace—
But to you does it matter

Please, I ask—
What is it you seek
Never though not an answer—
You listen not as I speak

I hear you so plainly—
And each word that you say
My cognition is clouded—
So please tell me,
tell me the way

I want to be alone—
And you out of my mind
My mind would be clear then—
It is that I beg you;
please be so kind

For how I can I help you—
So that I can be free
I need you to listen—
Otherwise, there is no me

If only I’d known—
That you’d never leave
I could explain to my sanity—
That you denied its reprieve

I had always wanted to try painting a silhouette with the thick impasto style that I typically use. I also wanted to test out a vignetting process on a painting to give it more of a photographic feel, so the two ‘dreams’ were made possible within this one painting.

A palette knife and brush were both used. The palette knife, where the paint needed to be heavier, and the brush to add fine detail (and the vignetting that I spoke of earlier).

I’m extremely happy with the way that it turned out. From a distance of over 6’ away, it looks like a photograph. Once you get closer though, you start to see the heavy paint texture and the tiniest details.

The painting is mounted in a heavy ornate/gothic wooden frame that really suits the subject well. I added a white wooden liner to give more depth to the painting.
