The Solitude Of Sunflowers - Original Oil Painting
Canvas size 24x18 (overall framed size is approximately 34x28)
The solitude, the sunflowers, the everything
I get lost— lost in it all
My head tells me I’m wrong
But my heart tells me the truth
It’s so easy, you see
When it all seems within a grasp
To search for the answers
Before the question is ever asked
The peace, the quiet, the everything
I can’t help but wonder
When I started this journey
Was I already where I needed to be
But back to the sunflowers
Their beauty, I can’t help but cry
The answers to which I was searching
It was within the sunflowers that they lie
I’ve been experimenting with various styles but end up coming back to the same style which you see here. This painting is also another example of where I begin painting one way, but resort back to what I think looks the best, or at least what the painting is telling me it wants to be.
The entire painting was done with a palette knife, using thickened paint to build the needed layers. With the narrow palette knife that I use, the painting has thousands upon thousands of grooves that flow in different directions. Each groove allows the light to reflect in different ways. With this interaction between the paint and light, the painting can look one way in the light of morning and entirely different in the evening. I spent well over 100+ hours from start to finish on this painting in order to get the exact look I was after.
(Note— this painting was part of the first installment of the Team KY Art Gallery, and was displayed in the Kentucky state Capitol building from July-Dec 2021)
